Around Kisumu
Kisumu, City Tour (2½) hours
Kisumu National Museum:
This place is just 1.5Km to the Eastern part from city centre. It’s a good place to learn more about social and economic lifestyle of the communities found in this region e.g. Luo, Luhyia, Kalenjins and Gusii. View a Luo traditional homestead, material culture that were used by these communities before coming of British, Fresh water aquarium, Snake Park, Tortoise pen and view Crocodilus niloticus.
Kisumu Impala Park: (Animal Sanctuary) This place is 1.5 km to the southern part from the city centre, a well stocked animal sanctuary, wildlife found here include; Panthera leo, Panthera Pardus, Acinonyx jubatus, Syncerus caffer and others. It is also the best place for people who like nature walk.

Places to visit in Kisumu include; National Museum, Impala Park, Kisumu port, Kit-Mikayi and other areas.
Lake Victoria:
The largest tropical fresh water lake in Africa, wildlife includes; Lake Victoria Basin Biome species of birds, such as globally threatened chloropeta gracillirostris and Linarius mfumbiri, species of fish, Hippos, Crocodilus niloticus, Varanus niloticus and others.
Maboko Island:
A good place for nature walk, and interacts with local fishermen who live there.
Ndere Island National Park: The Park has the beautiful scenery of hills made of rolling red oat grass, trees and shrubs. Wildlife includes; Impalas, Crocodilus niloticus, Varanus niloticus, Papio anubis, both forest and wetland birds.
Watch sunrise or sun-setting while in the boat.
Sport fishing, in Lake Victoria 1 ½ a day or whole day.
Equator line:
Crosses at Maseno Centre, the line traverses Kenya into two halves at zero degrees latitude. The trip requires ( 2 ½ hours)
Kisumu- Mbasa Island: (5 nights 6 days ). We start our safari from Kisumu in a van, early in the morning to Luanda Kotieno, catch a ferry from Luanda Kotieno to Mbita, we get into our van to Rusinga Island, we catch a boat to Mbasa Island, birds breading area, Birds such as Phalacrocorax carbo, Phalacrocorax africanus and Threskiornis eathiopicus, view Varunus niloticus, wild goats, fresh water otters, then we head to Takawiri Island to view men and women fishing together, stop at Takawiri Resort for swimming , view flying foxes on palm trees, after that we eat our packed lunch, get into our boat, ride back to Rusinga Island, we take a van to ICIPE Guest House or Rusinga Lodge for a night. The following day after breakfast, we visit Tom Mboya Mausoleum for 2 hours; from there we go straight to Ruma National Park for an evening game drive and spend a night there. In the morning after leaving Ruma National Park, stop for 10 minutes to view tea plantation on our way to Masaai Mara National game reserve for 3 nights and 4days.
Migingo Island was once a disputed Island between Kenya and Uganda: (5 nights 6 days). We start our safari from Kisumu, in a big powerful cruise boat that ha a capacity to carry between 20- 50 people. On our way before we stop at Mageta Island to view British colony old prison for 10 minutes, on our way we shall enjoy viewing beautiful hills, escarpments and smaller Islands, then we head to Migingo Island for 1 ½ hours, at Migingo we will be able to view a beautiful part of Ugandan side, interact with local fishermen, view the largest fish in the Lake Nile Perch (Lates niloticus), which has economical value, Oreochromis niloticus and the smallest species of fish in the Lake e.g. Silver cyprinid ( Rastrineobola argentea), We shall also enjoy viewing specis of wetland birds such as Bubulcus ibis, Egretta garzetta, Casmerodius albus, Haliaetus vocifer, Mycteria ibis and Ceryle rudis. After that we go back to our cruise boat then ride to ICIPE Guest House or Rusinga Lodge for a night. The following day, after breakfast, we visit Tom Mboya Mausoleum for 2 hours; from there we head to Ruma National Park, stop for 10 minutes to view tea plantation on our way to Masaai Mara Game Reserve for 3 nights 4days.
Rock art:
This place is situated at Mfangano island, and visit Abasuba Community peace Museum (1 night 2 days)
Thimlich Ohinga:
Was named by world monument fund in 1999 as among the 100 most endangered sites in the world, and one of the only nine sites nominated into the list from Africa for the year 2000.( 1 night 2 days)
Kit- Mikayi: (First Woman’s Rock). This is an archaeological site, A Luo shrine with Gigantic boulders sitting a top each other, cultural place where you can visit and understand more about Luo community, interact with locals and visit polygamous homes.( 3 hours).
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum:,
This is a historical site, the best place to know more about this great statesman and Kenya politics during those days. ( ½ a day)
Simbi Nyahima: (A Crater Lake). This place is popular for internationally threatened Birds, make a short walk around this place and watch, birds such as; Pheonicopterus minor and other water birds, the walls around this alkaline Lake is a roosting area for birds such as Hirundo senegalensis, Hirundo abyssinica and other species of swallows. ( ½ a day)
Tabaka Soapstone:
This is the best place in Kenya to view soapstone rocks and products made from raw materials.
Nandi- Rock, (Hiking 750m high):
This is the best hiking area around Western region, and no more about Nandi community.
Ruma National Park (1 night 2days):
The only park in East African where Roan Antelope, Hippotragus equinus are viewed, other wildlife include; Diceros bicornis, smallest antelope Oribi, Rothchild giraffe, forest birds, e.g vulture and other mammals.
Kericho Tea Plantation:
View tea plantation and visit any factory around this area. ( ½ a day)
Kakamega National Reserve (day tour):
The only remaining and protected Tropical rain forest, which is also a remnant of Guinea-Congo rain forest. Best place to see indigenous trees and shrubs that has medicinal and social values to the people, wildlife includes; 300 species of forest birds where some of them are Guinea- Congo Biome species such as Grey parrot, 7 species of primates such as the endangered species such as pottos, species of snakes such as Bitis gabonica, Bitis nasiconis,and Naja melanolenca, other wildlife to be seen here include Red Flanked Duikers, Montane Side Stripped chameleon, Flying Squirrel, species of butterflies such as Emperor swallowtail and army ants.
Masaai Mara Game Reserve: (2 nights 3 days or 3 nights 4 days). This game reserve is found on the southern part of Rift Valley Region, at an altitude between 1500m- 1700m above sea level. This is the best game reserve in Africa, with beautiful rolling savannah grassland and hill. Wildlife include Big 5, Giraffa, Camelopardalis, Crocuta crocuta, Granti and Thomsoni gazelles, Painted wolves, Canis mesomelus and Mungos mungo. Other birds found here Struthio camelus and Torgos tracheliotus, some common insects seen here are termites, army ants and dung Beatles. Millions of wildebeest and Zebra (The greatest wildlife spectacle).
Saiwa National Park:
The smallest park in Kenya, a good place for nature walk, a home to Ttrangelaphus spekii, other wildlife include; De-Brazza monkies and birdlife.
Nakuru National Park (a Ramsar site): 1 night 2 days.This alkaline Lake is rich in cynophyte, spirulina, platensis, blue green algae, crustaceans and Oreochromis alculicus which are foods to many wetland birds such as internationally threatened Phoenicopterus minor, Phoenicopterus rubber and other water birds such as Pelecanus onocrotalus. Other wildlife include;Panthera leo, both Diceros bicornis and Cerototherium simium are found just closer to the water where they spend their time wallowing on mud, other animals are Panthera pardus, Rothchild giraffe, Syncerus caffer, Defassa waterbuck and other animals.
Lake Elementaita (1night 2 days):
This alkaline swallow Lake is found in Great Rift Valley Region, is a home to the internationally threatened Pheonicopterus rubber which breeds here.Other water birds found here are Pelacanus onocrotalus that nest here and other water birds.
Lake Bogoria (1 night 2 days):
This alkaline Lake in Great Rift Valley Region, is breeding area for the internationally threatened Phoenicopterus minor which are always here in large number. Other water birds found here are Podiceps and Nigricollis which do well here. It is also a place to see hot spring water.
Lake Naivasha:
The Lake is at the highest point at altitude 1800m above sea level a fresh water Lake, with a small extension of the Lake, with is alkaline, bordered with yellow backed acacia. This salty water is a home to the internationally threatened Phoenicopterus minor and other water birds.
Hells gate National Park:
Wildlife includes: Syncerus caffer, antelopes, Lappet- faced Vulture and other smaller mammals, and the park has hot spring water.
Nairobi National Park (a day Tour):
Is just at the door step of the capital city. Wildlife includes; (Taurotragus oryx) with other few Big 5 such as, Pathera leo, Panthera pardus, Syncerus caffer and other mammals.
Aberdares National Park, (2 nights 3 days.):
The park has Treetop lodge where Queen Elizabeth 2nd slept one night as princess only to wake up as a queen after the death of her father King George the 5th. It is a home to the endangered species of antelope called Trangelaphus euryceros, other wildlife include; the Big 5. Zebras, Potamochoerus larvantus, Mungos mungo. The forest supports migrant birds.
MT. Kenya National Park, (A Biosphere Reserve): 3 nights 4 days. The tallest mountain in Kenya, and second after Mt. Kilimanjaro, a good place for Hikers, other wildlife includes Big 5, Zebras,Giraffa camelopadalis the forest part with bamboos, indigenous trees, shrubs and thick alpine trees which is a home to the endangered species of antelope called Trangelaphus euyceros,and other mammals such us Accinonyx jubutus, and Zebras The forest supports migrant birds from afrotropic zones.
Amboseli National Park (2 nights 3 days); The Park has beautiful rolling savannah grassland and hills, wildlife includes; Big 5, Giraffa camelopardalis, Accinonyx jubutus, Crocuta crocuta , Painted wolves, Canis mesomelus, Oryx gazelle beisa, forest birds found here e.g Struthio camelus, Vultures and Secretary, this is a place where researching of Loxodota africanus is done.
Mt. Elgon National Park (a Biosphere reserve): 2 night 3 days. The park has Montane forest, indigenous trees and shrubs, bamboo, Alpine moorland. It is volcanic with huge caldera and on its summit it has spectacular flat top basalt. Some parts have lava caves which Elephants dig for salt. Some parts of this park need driving while other higher parts are just good for walking. This Ecosystem is also a catchment area for River Turkwel that drain into Lake Turkana and River Nzoia that drains into Lake Victoria, Other wildlife includes; Big 5 and other animals.
Sweet Water Sanctuary:
The only sanctuary in Kenya where Chimpanzee are seen.
Tsavo National: (3 nights 4 days). This is the largest National Park in Kenya. The park is divided into two parts. Tsavo West and Tsavo East, whereby the West part has smaller area while the East part has bigger area, both of them have the Big 5, other wildlife includes Reticulated giraffe, Accinonyx jubutus, zebras and antelopes, such as Gerenunk that has a long neck and is able to stand on its two hind legs in order to browse tall shrubs, other primates found here are yellow baboons. They are also a good place for Birdlife.
Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve: 1 night and 2 days
This park is situated at North Coast with a size of about 213sq km. Wildlife found here includes: Turtles, Green Hawksbill which breeds here, Olive Ridley, Fish Species includes: Angel Fish, Baracuda, Butterfly Fish, Goat Fish, Sharks, Surgeon Fish, other wildlife include; Dolphins, Invertebrates include: Clams, Crowns, Lobsters, Octopus and Sea Anemone.Species of corals eg Boulders Corals, Stag Horn Corals, Sea Grass Corals. Migrant Birds.
All these can easily be seen if you board a glass bottomed boat.
Seregeti National Park:-
This Park in Tanzania borders Masaai Mara in Kenya. It has the same features, same animals and birds that are found in Masaai Mara game Reserve.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:-
This is the best park where one can easily experience close-up encounter with these gentle giant primate, Mountain Gorillas.
